School’s Out for the Summer
The Horizons after school tutoring program finished the year with 7 students involved and with big plans for the coming year. The program received a $3000 grant from the Greene County Community Foundation and plans are to use it for a computer, educational materials and games and nutritious snacks for the students. A field trip may also be funded by the grant money.
The program was staffed with nearly 30 volunteers of all ages. Since it took place during daytime hours, some who would have liked to help were unable to because it conflicted with their work schedules. Most of the volunteers have agreed to help during the next school year.
The local school district provided a program advisor, saw that each student took home an information sheet provided by the program, provided weekly spelling lists and provided transportation from the school to the library where the tutoring program was held. An informational article about the program was included in the school newsletter.
The program is set to begin again in September and run thru May 1 when little league ball practice begins. The core planning committee will meet to review last year’s program and again later this summer to plan for the ‘08-’09 school year.
